GDU delegation members visited Chișinău, Moldova, as part of the ModElSys project
Last week, before our Kyiv trip, GDU delegation members, comprising Susanne Nies, Robert Carr, Rouven Stubbe, and Alisa Yuasa Schubert visited Chișinău, Moldova, as part of the ModElSys project. The project aims to strengthen power system modelling capacities in Moldova and address national energy challenges through developing use cases in partnership with the Technical University of Moldova (UTM).
Together with UTM researchers, we worked on how to develop a more comprehensive PyPSA model for Moldova (and its interconnections), which is expected in early 2026.
Our partners at UTM also organised a public workshop, “Opportunities for Increasing Moldova’s Energy Independence,” where representatives from Moldelectrica, the National Agency for Energy Regulation, UTM, and GDU discussed pathways to enhance the country’s energy security.
To deepen our understanding of Moldova’s crucial role within the power system block shared with Ukraine and its connection to the EU, we met with several stakeholders, including:
- Ambassador Hubert Knirsch from the German Embassy of Moldova
- The transmission system operator, IS Moldelectrica
- The main power plant operators, TERMOELECTRICA S.A.
- Representatives from the Ministry of Energy of Republic of Moldova
- The National Center for Sustainable Energy / Centrul Național pentru Energie Durabilă about the recent surge in RES capacities and the integration of their data into our future model.
Sincere thanks to our hosts at UTM — Mihai Tirsu, Iulian Rotari, Vasiliev Irina, Sergiu Robu, and Dumitru Braga — for their excellent cooperation and warm hospitality. The GDU team looks forward to continuing the ModElSys project with such dedicated partners.
