GDU Highlighted in Tagesspiegel Background Coverage of URC 2025
Susanne Nies, Project Lead of Green Deal Ukraina (GDU), contributed expert commentary to a recent Tagesspiegel Background article on the Ukraine Recovery Conference (URC) 2025, which took place in Rome earlier this month. In the article, she reflects on both the achievements and challenges discussed at the conference, particularly regarding Ukraine’s energy sector and international investment support.
Among the key developments covered was the announcement of the Ukraine Renewable Energy Risk Mitigation Mechanism (URMM), presented by the EBRD and the European Commission. The mechanism aims to mobilise €1.5 billion for renewable energy investments in Ukraine and was developed with input from GDU and its partners.
In her remarks, Susanne Nies described the conference as a “major success”, emphasising that Ukraine was brought back to the international agenda not only through high-level political commitments but also through active engagement by stakeholders looking to invest in Ukraine’s future. She noted that these discussions created momentum for long-term cooperation, even amid significant concerns about the country’s energy security and the resilience of its infrastructure in the face of ongoing attacks.
