Direct vs Embodied Energy

Direct vs Embodied Energy

Sectoral outputs can be used as intermediate inputs by other sectors, or as final consumption goods. There are often substantial gaps between a sector’s direct energy use (lighter bars) and the energy embodied in its final consumption goods (darker bars). This kind of exploration is a starting point for analysing the effects of CO2 taxes by considering the embodied energy in value chains.
